Cyclist dies after horror northern beaches crash

A cyclist struck by a car on Sydney’s northern beaches earlier this week has died.

Nick Sky, 47, was cycling with 56-year-old Michael Collings on Forest Way in Belrose just after 6am on Tuesday when they were hit by a station wagon.

Footage from the scene showed crumbled bikes sitting on the side of the road and a white car’s windscreen smashed.

Sky, an experienced cyclist and runner, was rushed to the Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery for a brain injury. He died on Thursday morning.

Collings was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.

“Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics, who treated both cyclists,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A crime scene was established, which was forensically examined by police from the Crash Investigation Unit.”

The 24-year-old driver of the car that allegedly hit the pair was charged with negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and causing bodily harm by misconduct in a motor vehicle.

Since Sky’s death, the driver has also been charged with negligent driving occasioning death.

The driver was not injured and underwent mandatory testing in hospital.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear in Manly Local Court on July 24.
