A 21-year-old man has been arrested after his partner was stabbed to death in a unit at Kingswood in Sydney’s west on Monday afternoon.

The man was arrested at Derby Street in Penrith at around 7.10pm on Monday and taken to Penrith police station.

Police and a Careflight helicopter were called to Kingswood after reports of a stabbing - paramedics were unable to save a woman in her 20s who died at the scene.

Witnesses said he was earlier seen running from the unit complex in Kingswood along the Great Western Highway in Kingswood, sparking a manhunt in western Sydney.

The woman, also 21, died in the Kingswood apartment after emergency services were called at 1.40pm.

She was found with significant injuries including two stab wounds to her chest and died at the scene.

“It’s alleged that a 21-year-old male in a domestic relationship with this person is the perpetrator of this incident and caused those injuries to the female,” said Detective Superintendent Trent King, the Nepean Area commander. “He was last seen on foot running from the unit complex.”

Paramedics and police worked to save the woman “for a prolonged period” but could not, King said. She is yet to be formally identified.

The woman and man lived in a share-house and flatmates alerted police over the incident.

The 21-year-old man was known to police due to some minor transport infringements but there was no history of violent acts on police records, King said.
