A 27-year-old man killed in an alleged road-rage incident in Sydney’s west on Thursday was dragged 100 metres down a busy road and left to die, police say, while parents were dropping their children at school nearby.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the man fled the scene on Jersey Road in Blackett, near Mount Druitt, about 8.45am. Police are now searching for the driver of a white ute.
Acting Inspector Shane Ranee, from Mount Druitt police, said he believed road rage was a factor in the hit-run but did not say what act may have triggered it.
“Apparently the victim had gotten out of [his] vehicle after being threatened by a car following him and obviously, words were said. That’s what’s led us to believe it could have happened because of a road-rage incident,” Ranee said.
Paramedics tried to save the victim, who was wearing high-visibility work gear, but he died at the scene, which was inside a 40km/h school zone.
The victim’s red ute was towed away. A crime scene has been established and police were seen taking photographs of evidence including a single black Vans shoe on Jersey Road.
The road was busy at the time of the incident, with parents dropping off children to several schools nearby. The site is also close to a busy shopping centre.
Police are asking the public to help them find the driver of a white ute, which features a black metal tray, a black canopy and a black toolbox, with metal racks on top. They have called on anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, or who saw what happened, to contact them.
Ranee said the man’s death was devastating for his parents and family.
“We appeal for the driver to come forward and hand himself into police, because we will find you.”
